Harvesting Solar Power and Energy Storage

Australia is one of the world’s solar “hot zones” which provides maximum exposure to the sun’s rays throughout the year, and this abundant energy source is FREE, solar panels capture this energy and convert it to usable power for your home or business.

Installing a Solar system that matches your usage, instantly eliminates your daytime power bill - Although the real savings only start when you store the excess power into a battery bank, and harvest it after sunset, it is that simple!

Please Note: We only market quality Monocrystalline 350W and 500W Solar Panels or better!

Our 350W, 72 cell panels (196cm x 99cm) and 500W, 96 cell panels (196cm x 131cm), obviously cost more than the old 270W panel technology, But remember the larger Wattage panels considerably increase the kWh harvest rate, and also reduce the break-even time line considerably quicker!

There are also 400~490W BiFacial (double sided) solar Panels that generate power from both sides, this is done by harvesting up to 20% more Power via harvesting Reflective light from the surrounding ground/area.

Businesses selling 270~290W panels are selling customers short, as 270W panel harvest 30% less energy per m2 than a 350W panel, 270W panel also require 30% larger roof space (footprint) to harvest the same power as 350W panels.

Things are changing rapidly in the solar world, so don't be fooled into purchasing 270W panels, as YOU are the one that will loose long term!

Types of Solar Panel Installation;

Fixed Flat or Tilted Solar Arrays: Are the lease effective at harvesting energy !

Single-Axis Solar Tracking Arrays: Increase energy harvest by over 30%, SAT can be configured to Track East~West Vertically or Horizontally.

Dual-Axis Solar Tracking Arrays: Are capable of harvesting up to 100% more power than fixed flat panel arrays.

NB: With DAT the further South (or North) of the equator increases the solar harvesting time up to 14 hours in Hobart, Tasmania, where Brisbane, QLD that will be approx. 10 hours.

With most things it comes down to Cost, cost modeling show that Labour to install Fixed & Fixed Tilt PV systems are the cheapest, followed by Single Axis Tracking then Dual Axis Tracking system is least competitive to install, however the initial material & installation cost difference is recovered quite rapidly with SAT and more-so with DAT, as the increased harvesting commonly reaches the break-even period to recover the additional installation cost incurred in approx. 12 months, irrelevant on the size of the PV array!

However, not all technologies preformed equal, as labour costs for installation play a large part of initial and final cost competitiveness. It also demonstrated how Low Cost of Energy (LCOE) can underpin a commercial ‘Contract-for-Difference’ (CFD) feed-in tariff scheme applicable to supporting investment in utility-scale solar farms.

The key issue for either residential or commercial solar system, is producing the best financial return in the quickest time, by storing Solar energy or any alternative energy into a battery bank or thermal storage system, will substantially contribute to black-out proofing your home or premises, thus minimising paying the deceptive electricity retainers for power after sunset, and battery storage energy also reduce the reliance on fossil fuels, to ensure a brighter future for our planet!

Few people know that Solar harvesting & storage has the potential to provide over 1,000 times the total world energy consumption, though in 2017 Solar provided less than 1% of the total power used.   Installing solar can contribute to increasing that figure.

What is the best installation angle for Fixed & Single-axis solar panels ?

The latitudinal tilt angle of fixed panels directly relate to angle of the sun in the sky, depends on both the season and your location on the earth;

In Winter the sun is Lower in the sky, and in Summer the sun is Higher in the sky.

The closer you live to the equator, the higher the sun is in the sky all year round (i.e. the lower your degree of latitude tilt is).

NB: DAT is excluded, as the array is automatically tilted perpendicular (straight at) to the Sun !

So, calculating the optimum tilt for fixed tilted panels on your roof is actually dead simple.  To maximize the power produced over the whole year, all you need to do is set the angle for your solar panels, to the latitude of your location as shown below;

Remember: DAT can harvest over 45% more energy from the sun, than flat fixed panels, and the further South you live, DAT increases the harvesting of energy for a longer period each day!

A New Super Solar Cell invented at the Australian University of New South Wales (UNSW), has gained the world efficiency record of over 40%, these solar cells are made from Gallium Arsenide, not Silicon like in conventional solar panels.  Due to past cost restrictions Gallium Arsenide solar cells were only used in space exploration and Satellites, a single 2kWh Gallium arsenide Super cell measure approx. 10cm x 15cm and replaces Six (6) 340w (2mt x 1mt, 72cell) Solar Panels when used in conjunction with Heliostat mirrors.   After receiving a million dollar government grant, RayGen, an Australian company has developed & is now manufacturing scalable commercial solar arrays.

What is your Solar Array payback time?

This is covered in more detail on either the Residential or Commercial Solar Array pages, there are some significant differences to address with the type of power that is produced (AC/DC) and in turn the distance the power needs to travel before it is converted &/or consumed.

When compared to Fixed rooftop or ground mounted Solar Arrays, Single and Dual Axis Solar Tracking will significantly increase the amount of solar energy that is harvested.  We advise the purchase of either type of tracking, use the pros & cons that best suits your location.

If planning to Go-Off-Grid using a Solar Array & Gen-set, we highly advise you invest in Battery storage, as battery storage is a lot cheaper long term than a stand-by Diesel Generator, if your area is plagued by power outages & ever increasing power bills, as a system with Solar, Battery storage & Diesel Generator combination will provide a totally reliable and independent power system, it's worth calculating how little it costs to run a Diesel Generator to totally black-out proof your system, yes it is a larger investment purchasing all three, however the reliability this system will provide is priceless, and the saving you will make will be ongoing for decades to come.

One great thing about Pole mounted Solar Tracking system, it is in fact the easiest system to dismantle & remove the whole assembly including the Pole, leaving no damage or footprint behind, this leaves you free to take your system to your next premises and re-install it.
