One example of Break-even period: We looked at the energy usage of a large free-standing heritage house on there farm near Peak Hill, NSW, they both work from home, which makes their energy use higher than most households.  Like many Rural property owners, they are sick of constant blackouts, and looking to install a DART-8 module and Energy storage, to allow them to feed any excess power into the state grid.

Using the data from there power bills, we recommended two systems consisting of;

  1. 5~6kW Hybrid Inverter with AGS, MPPT & battery management System (BMS) *$1'750.
    2x 10.24kWh (20.48kWh) YiY 48V LITHIUM Iron (LiFePO4) batteries *$8'375)
    3.52kW Solar Array = 8x 445W Panels approx. $2'000
    DART-8, 8 panel Dual Axis-solar Radiation Tracking (DART) Kit $6'000.
    Package Deal Cost $18'125, excluding installation.

They are planning for a commercial cool room that will substantially increase there power usage, they also have an old un-used Diesel Generator, all that needs to be taken into consideration, as now the retail electricity rate has passes 30 cents kWh, it is actually cheaper to produce electricity using a Diesel generator, saying that not all generators are as economical or as clean a running as each other, and you may want to consider pollution and you can calculate your Green house gasses here.

Not for everyone: Diesel engines (known as a compression-ignition or CI engine) were originally operate on Vegetable Oil, and will operate very efficiently long term on finely filtered down to 2 micron Waste Vegetable Oil (WVO), a FREE readily available resource that is biodegradable!

If they installed a 3.5kW fixed tilted solar array, they can only expect to generate around 15kW of peak power per day, as "tilted fixed panels" will only generate at best 4hrs of Peak energy per day, with a few kW of energy generated on the shoulder ramping period each morning & evening.

So, with them out-laying an additional few thousand dollars for a 8 panel dual axis-solar radiation tracking array (DART), there generation is greatly increase to exceed there daily kW consumption!

There System Payback Break-Even time with a 8 panel DART array producing 34kWh per 10hr day, saves them paying for 28kWh @$0.275 c/kWh for power, save $7.70 per day.  So, if the farm uses 10kWh day during solar hours and 18kWh for the remainder of a 24hr day, tat leaves 6kW of excess energy to Export into the state grid, this calculates to 6kWh @$0.08c/kWh a day =$0.48 per day or $175.00 yearly feed-in Tariff, that equates to a total power saving of $3'400 per year, providing approx. 78 month pay back period using LiFePO4 batteries, then possibly the next 20+ years the Power will be FREE!

Obviously, if they choose to produce more power by installing a larger Solar array and operating their decommissioned Diesel Generator on Waste Vegetable Oil (WVO), it will provide a quicker payback period.  Best-case scenario, WVO is a game changer by producing additional power for virtually free!
